BIROBIDZHAN: MUSIC OF THE SOUL
Special Jury in memory of Massimo Prevedello
Does the Promised Land exist? Many Jews sought it in the Russian Far East: a distant and in many ways inhospitable land where the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, in 1932, founded the Jewish Autonomous Republic of Birobidzhan, designed to host all those Russian Jews who wanted to live, more or less voluntarily, in an independent Jewish state, consistent with their history, their traditions, their language, Yiddish. A land where faiths, languages, cultures and traditions now coexist in harmony.
